The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is a procedure that restricts the amount of food intake and decreases the absorption of food and nutrients to promote weight loss. Roux-en-Y is often referred to as gastric bypass and is considered the gold standard in bariatric surgery.
The procedure involves creating a small pouch in the stomach similar to the adjustable gastric band to restrict food intake. Food absorption is reduced by redirecting the food past the stomach, duodenum and upper part of the intestine. Food will move directly from the small pouch directly into the small intestine.
